Frequently asked questions: microphone windscreen

In this section, we would like to answer frequently asked questions about microphone windscreens.

Why do microphones need to have a windscreen?
Microphones need windscreens to protect the microphone diaphragm from gusts of air. Without a windscreen, outdoor wind noise or breathing can cause loud pops in the audio signal, which can be distracting and interfere with the quality of the recording. Windscreens break up gusts of air before they interact with the microphone diaphragm, allowing sound waves to pass through while redirecting wind away from the diaphragm. This helps to prevent unwanted noise and maintain the clarity of the audio recording.

What for different microphone windscreens exist?
There are several types of microphone windscreens that are used for different situations and applications. Some of the most common types include:

Foam windscreens:
These are made of soft, porous foam that fits over the microphone head. They are inexpensive and easy to use, and are ideal for reducing wind noise and protecting the microphone from saliva.

Furry windscreens:
These are similar to foam windscreens, but they are covered with a layer of fake fur. They are designed to reduce wind noise even further than foam windscreens and are often used in outdoor broadcasting.

Blimp windscreens:
These are large, cylindrical windscreens that encase the entire microphone. They are designed to provide maximum wind protection and are often used in professional film and video production.

Pop filters:
These are screens that are placed in front of the microphone to reduce the impact of plosive sounds (such as “p” and “b” sounds) and other breathing noises on a recording.
Different windscreens may have different levels of effectiveness depending on the specific application and the wind conditions.

Therefore, Microphone windscreens can be a marketing tool because they offer a way to promote a company's brand and create a unique experience, appealing to a wide range of customers.

When should you use a microphone windscreen?

A microphone windscreen should be used in situations where there is a potential for wind noise or unwanted breath sounds to be picked up by the microphone.

Outdoor recording:
Wind can be a major problem when recording outdoors, as it can cause distracting noise in the recording. A windscreen can help to reduce or eliminate this noise.

Interviews :
Windscreens can be used to reduce the sound of a person’s breath when they are speaking during an interview.

Broadcasting:
A windscreen can be used to reduce wind noise when broadcasting live from an outdoor location.

Film and video production:
Windscreens can be used to reduce wind noise on the audio track of a film or video recording.

Indoor recording near HVAC systems or fans:
Even when recording indoors, wind noise can be a problem if the microphone is placed near a source of forced air.

Pop filter: Pop filter can be used to reduce the impact of plosive sounds.

Protecting a microphone:
Windscreens can also be used to protect microphones from dirt and saliva, and can be replaced to restore the microphone to a like-new state.
It’s always good practice to test the windscreen in the location where it will be used, and to use multiple windscreens for protection.

For what are foam windscreens used?

Foam windscreens are commonly used to reduce wind noise when recording audio. They are made of open-cell foam which fits snugly around the microphone. The foam creates a labyrinth effect, diverting wind in various directions and preventing it from directly interacting with the microphone diaphragm. They provide basic protection against wind and typically offer wind noise attenuation. They are also inexpensive, easy to use, and often come included with a microphone purchase.
Foam windscreens are also commonly used in video production because they are neutral aesthetically, they do not cause significant high-frequency loss, and are not visually distracting.

For what are Synthetic Fur Dead Cats used?

Dead Cats are a more advanced type of windscreen designed to provide superior wind protection. They consist of two layers: an inner layer of thin foam and an outer layer of synthetic fur. The strands of fur act as baffling to redirect wind, creating less friction and noise than traditional foam windscreens. They are available in various sizes to fit specific microphones or a variety of shotgun mics. They offer a significant wind noise reduction, typically between 25dB-40dB, and when layered over a foam windscreen, the attenuation can be up to 50dB. However, it is important to consider the quality of the windshield, as low-quality windjammers can cause high-frequency attenuation. High-quality windjammers effectively reduce wind noise while preserving sound quality.

What Are Baskets or Blimps?

Baskets, also known as blimps, are the most effective option for maximum wind noise protection. They also consist of two layers: an inner layer of thin foam and an outer layer of plastic or metal mesh. They are available in various sizes, and many options allow multiple microphones to be housed inside. Likewise, they create a large chamber of dead air, providing maximum attenuation of up to 50dB with minimal high-frequency loss.

Which windscreen should you choose?

When purchasing a windscreen, there are several factors to consider, including the type and size of the microphone, the level of noise attenuation needed, and the windscreen’s acoustic transparency. It’s essential to choose a windscreen that fits snugly on your microphone to seal any leakage points and prevent air from disturbing the diaphragm.
For handheld microphones, universal foam windscreens are a good option. Be sure to choose one that fully covers any ports on the microphone grill. For shotgun microphones, special windscreens are available that cover the long barrel of the mic, be sure to choose one that is large enough without allowing too much wiggle room.
Noise attenuation, or noise reduction, is the most important factor to consider when choosing a windscreen. For directional microphones, such as shotgun mics, that are susceptible to wind noise, a fur windjammer or a basket windscreen will offer more protection.
Acoustic transparency should also be taken into account when choosing a windscreen. Generally speaking, the more layers a windscreen has, the less transparent it will be. However, high-quality options can effectively block wind noise without adversely affecting audio quality.

Why is it necessary to replace the microphone windscreen periodically?

The windscreen can deteriorate over time, becoming dusty and potentially allowing debris to enter the microphone, which can cause malfunction. Additionally, exposure to UV radiation can shorten the lifespan of the windscreen.

How often should I clean the windscreen?

It is recommended to clean the windscreen regularly, it can be washed with warm soapy water, rinsed with clean water, shaken to remove water droplets, and left to air dry overnight. This will help to maintain the windscreen’s effectiveness and keep the microphone’s grill free from contaminants.

Which microphone windshield to which weather condition?

One of the greatest challenges for audio recording operators is getting good sound during recording. To get a good sound without any interrupting noises of air movements, it is important to look at the climate conditions and situations in which the recordings are taking place.

In this article, it will be analyzed which microphone types and brands are best for extreme weather conditions and which windshield should be used for which environmental climate.

Microphones and extreme environmental conditions

Recording in extreme weather conditions is a challenging task, and it is very valuable to have the right equipment and preparation. There are basic things sound recording operators need to know when working in bad weather.

The most significant to know is that certain microphones do not like temperature extremes. Although many condenser microphones, particularly lower-cost models, are prone to malfunction in hot and humid conditions, it is not always possible to avoid using a microphone in such environments.

In humidity levels and high temperatures, the sound operator enters a danger zone and needs to exercise extreme care, both in recording and shipping the microphone. In such situations, the sound should be very carefully monitored.

To avoid problems with condenser microphones in rapidly changing temperature and humidity conditions, it is recommended to allow the mic to adjust to the new environment before use. This can be difficult when moving from a cooled space to hot weather.

Sudden temperature shifts can cause condensation, resulting in audio issues such as hissing, crackling, or popping, and can also alter the frequency response or cause the mic to malfunction completely.

To prevent these issues, it is advisable to dry the mic with a cloth after use in such climates and store it in a desiccant bag to absorb any moisture. Using silica gel packets in equipment cases can also help mitigate the effects of temperature changes.

One issue with using microphones in freezing temperatures is that the diaphragm may stiffen, leading to increased noise and changes in frequency response.

Additionally, moisture in the air can affect the mic's element capacitance, causing further noise. These issues can make it difficult to capture clear audio in icy temperatures.

What kind of microphone shall I choose for bad weather conditions?

In extreme climates, more expensive microphones are recommended. Shotgun microphones like Rode NTG5 and Sennheiser MKH-416 are best for extreme climates.

These microphones are virtually immune to poor weather conditions. They also have lower self-noise than their inexpensive equivalents.

Dynamic microphones are often used by reporters in windy, wet conditions, such as during hurricanes because they can withstand harsh environments and still produce good audio quality.

In addition to wind and rain, wind noise can also be a problem when recording audio outdoors. To prevent wind noise, it is important to use a windshield on all microphones, even on calm days.

Condenser microphones, which have a lighter diaphragm than dynamic microphones, are more sensitive to wind noise and require a larger windshield for outdoor protection.

Which windscreen for extreme weather conditions and wind noise

Microphones may come with a basket and internal windshield, but they need further protection from extreme weather conditions such as heat, drastically changing temperatures, or cold and wet climate environments.

These synthetic covers for microphones in video production can help reduce wind noise during recording. These covers work by blocking the wind from hitting the microphone directly, which can be especially helpful when using a shotgun or condenser microphone.

Wind noise can be difficult or impossible to remove in post-production, so using a windshield is a practical and effective solution to prevent this issue. Windscreens, also known as wind muffs, come in various shapes and sizes to fit different types of microphones, including small ones for smartphone and GoPro microphones as well as larger ones for professional sound recording.

Conclusion

A foam windshield is the minimum level of protection that a microphone should have, but for outdoor recordings, it may be necessary to use more protective measures. For longer periods of bad weather, Zeppelin-style windshields for shotgun mics or furry dead cat windscreens can help to conceal the wind speeds noise of such bad climate conditions. The dead cat windshield is specially designed for wind noise reduction.

Professional condenser mics or shotgun microphone ´s are the best equipment for climate conditions with rapid shifts in temperature and much air movement.

The type of wind protection needed will depend on the specific environment and the preferences of the sound. By taking the time to carefully choose high-quality wind protection products and professional windscreens, it is possible to capture audio to match the quality of the video.

It is important to remember that while good sound quality can improve poor footage, great footage cannot save poor sound quality. Therefore, your sound recording equipment should always match your video applications.
